Background of the Study
Myocardial infarction (MI), commonly known as a heart attack, is a leading cause of death worldwide. In Nigeria, MI rates are rising due to an increase in risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity (Amobi & Nwachukwu, 2024). Rehabilitation following myocardial infarction is crucial for reducing the risk of recurrence, improving the quality of life, and enhancing long-term survival rates (Adegoke & Okon, 2023). Nurses play a central role in post-MI rehabilitation by providing patient education, promoting adherence to lifestyle changes, and supporting patients in their recovery process (Idris & Alabi, 2023).
In Niger State, there is a growing need for comprehensive post-MI rehabilitation programs to ensure that patients recover optimally and avoid further complications. Nurses in this setting are expected to provide education on medication management, physical activity, dietary changes, and psychological support. However, the level of knowledge and the effectiveness of nursing practices in post-MI rehabilitation have not been fully assessed, leading to potential gaps in patient care.
This study aims to assess nurses' knowledge and practices in post-myocardial infarction rehabilitation in Niger State, focusing on their ability to provide effective care and support for patients recovering from heart attacks.
Statement of the Problem
Although post-myocardial infarction rehabilitation is crucial for patient recovery, the effectiveness of nursing care in this context remains underexplored in Niger State. There is a need to assess the level of knowledge and the quality of rehabilitation practices provided by nurses to ensure that they are effectively addressing the needs of patients recovering from heart attacks. This study will identify gaps in knowledge and practice and offer insights into improving care for MI patients.
