Background of the Study

Myocardial infarction (MI), commonly known as a heart attack, is a leading cause of death worldwide. In Nigeria, MI rates are rising due to an increase in risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity (Amobi & Nwachukwu, 2024). Rehabilitation following myocardial infarction is crucial for reducing the risk of recurrence, improving the quality of life, and enhancing long-term survival rates (Adegoke & Okon, 2023). Nurses play a central role in post-MI rehabilitation by providing patient education, promoting adherence to lifestyle changes, and supporting patients in their recovery process (Idris & Alabi, 2023).

In Niger State, there is a growing need for comprehensive post-MI rehabilitation programs to ensure that patients recover optimally and avoid further complications. Nurses in this setting are expected to provide education on medication management, physical activity, dietary changes, and psychological support. However, the level of knowledge and the effectiveness of nursing practices in post-MI rehabilitation have not been fully assessed, leading to potential gaps in patient care.

This study aims to assess nurses' knowledge and practices in post-myocardial infarction rehabilitation in Niger State, focusing on their ability to provide effective care and support for patients recovering from heart attacks.

Statement of the Problem

Although post-myocardial infarction rehabilitation is crucial for patient recovery, the effectiveness of nursing care in this context remains underexplored in Niger State. There is a need to assess the level of knowledge and the quality of rehabilitation practices provided by nurses to ensure that they are effectively addressing the needs of patients recovering from heart attacks. This study will identify gaps in knowledge and practice and offer insights into improving care for MI patients.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge of nurses in post-myocardial infarction rehabilitation in Niger State.
  2. To evaluate the nursing practices involved in post-MI rehabilitation and their impact on patient recovery.
  3. To identify the challenges nurses face in providing effective post-MI rehabilitation care.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of nurses in post-myocardial infarction rehabilitation in Niger State?
  2. How effective are the nursing practices in post-MI rehabilitation in promoting patient recovery?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in providing post-MI rehabilitation care in Niger State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses with higher levels of knowledge in post-myocardial infarction rehabilitation are more likely to engage in effective rehabilitation practices.
  2. There is a significant relationship between nursing practices in post-MI rehabilitation and patient recovery outcomes.
  3. Nurses face significant barriers to providing effective post-myocardial infarction rehabilitation care in Niger State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nurses involved in post-myocardial infarction rehabilitation in Niger State. Limitations include variations in rehabilitation practices across different healthcare settings and challenges related to resource availability in rural areas.

Definitions of Terms

  • Post-myocardial infarction rehabilitation: The process of recovery after a heart attack, including lifestyle modifications, medication adherence, and physical rehabilitation.
  • Nurses' knowledge: The understanding and awareness of nurses regarding post-MI rehabilitation protocols, patient care, and risk factor management.
  • Rehabilitation practices: The actions taken by nurses to support patients in their recovery, including education, counseling, and physical rehabilitation activities.
